How were these figures compiled?
Every range in this guide comes from Obelisk Talent’s own market research, compiled in mid-2026. Three inputs feed the numbers: compensation conversations from our candidate pipeline across Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, and Tunisia; public job-board postings in those five markets; and published salary aggregates. Where the three sources disagree, we publish the band where they overlap rather than the widest possible spread.
These figures are directional, not audited payroll data, and not offers. Middle Eastern salaries are negotiated in local currency — Egyptian pounds, Jordanian dinars, Moroccan dirhams, Tunisian dinars, and in Lebanon frequently US dollars. We convert to CAD-equivalent annual figures at mid-2026 exchange rates. Currency movement alone can shift a band by several percentage points in a quarter, which is one reason this guide is reviewed regularly.
The ranges describe base annual compensation for full-time professionals who work with international clients. Employer costs — social insurance contributions, health coverage, equipment — sit on top of these figures and vary by country. Purely local roles with no international exposure often pay below the bottom of these bands; we exclude them because they are not the market a Canadian employer competes in.
If you need a single number for planning, use the middle of a band. If you are benchmarking a specific candidate, treat the band as a starting point — individual offers move with stack, English fluency, portfolio, and prior international-client experience.
What do software developers earn across the Middle East?
Software developers across the Middle East earn between $18,000 and $42,000 CAD-equivalent per year in 2026, depending on seniority and specialization. That band covers the five markets Obelisk recruits from, with Egypt and Jordan supplying the deepest engineering pipelines.
The regional talent depth is established, not speculative. PwC, Capgemini, and Vodafone all run large technical teams in Egypt, and they compete for the same senior engineers a Canadian SMB would want. That multinational demand is what anchors the top of the senior band.
Within each band, three factors push a candidate toward the top: in-demand stacks (TypeScript, cloud-native back ends, Flutter), fluent working English, and a track record with North American or European clients. DevOps carries the widest band in the table because production cloud experience is scarcer than general development skill.
| Role | Annual range (CAD-equivalent) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Junior software developer | $18,000–$24,000 | 0–2 years; supervised feature delivery |
| Mid-level software developer | $24,000–$32,000 | 2–5 years; owns features end-to-end |
| Senior software developer | $32,000–$42,000 | 5+ years; system design and mentoring |
| DevOps engineer | $26,000–$44,000 | Widest band — cloud certifications drive the top end |
| Mobile developer | $22,000–$38,000 | Flutter and native iOS/Android |
| Data analyst | $20,000–$34,000 | SQL and BI core; Python and modelling widen the range |

What do marketing and sales professionals earn?
Marketing and sales compensation in the region runs below technical compensation, with most roles falling between $12,000 and $26,000 CAD-equivalent per year. The exception pattern is performance-linked pay: sales development reps typically negotiate a commission structure on top of the base figures below.
The strongest candidates in this category have run campaigns for international accounts — Gulf, European, or North American brands and agencies. That client history matters more than certifications, and it is what separates the top quartile of each band from the median.
| Role | Annual range (CAD-equivalent) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Digital marketing specialist | $14,000–$26,000 | Paid-media management commands the top end |
| SEO specialist | $14,000–$24,000 | Technical SEO pays above content-only profiles |
| Social media manager | $12,000–$22,000 | Multi-platform and paid-social skills push upward |
| Sales rep / SDR | $12,000–$24,000 | Base only — commission negotiated on top |

What do designers and creatives earn?
Design compensation splits sharply between product design and production design. UX/UI designers — particularly those with shipped product work — earn close to developer rates, while graphic design and video editing sit in a lower, flatter band.
Portfolio quality dominates pricing here more than years of experience. A designer with three years and a strong SaaS portfolio will out-earn a generalist with eight. For Canadian buyers, this is useful: the portfolio you can evaluate directly is also the thing the market prices.
| Role | Annual range (CAD-equivalent) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| UX/UI designer | $18,000–$34,000 | Product UX with shipped work commands the senior end |
| Graphic designer | $12,000–$24,000 | Brand-system work pays above production design |
| Video editor | $12,000–$24,000 | Motion graphics and ad-format experience push upward |

What do finance and operations professionals earn?
Finance and operations roles span the widest relative spread in this guide — from $8,000 CAD-equivalent for entry-level virtual assistants to $28,000 for accountants with international reporting experience. English fluency and tooling familiarity (QuickBooks, Xero, North American bookkeeping conventions) are the main differentiators.
Accountants with IFRS exposure or experience preparing books for foreign entities top their band. Customer support pricing tracks written and spoken English quality plus schedule fit — a shifted afternoon-evening Cairo schedule that overlaps Canadian Eastern hours is the standard arrangement for international-facing roles, and candidates who work it are priced accordingly.
| Role | Annual range (CAD-equivalent) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Accountant | $14,000–$28,000 | IFRS and foreign-entity reporting top the band |
| Bookkeeper | $10,000–$20,000 | QuickBooks and Xero proficiency expected |
| Executive assistant | $10,000–$20,000 | Calendar, inbox, and travel for founders and executives |
| Customer support | $8,000–$18,000 | English quality and Eastern-overlap schedule drive pricing |
| Virtual assistant | $8,000–$16,000 | Generalist administrative support |

How do these salaries compare with Canadian equivalents?
Canadian developer base salaries run roughly $80,000–$130,000 CAD in 2026, before employer costs. PayScale Canada’s 2026 data puts the average Canadian CTO at $126,750 (verify before deciding). Once payroll taxes, benefits, recruiting fees, and equipment are added, a senior local hire typically lands at $110,000–$190,000 all-in per year.
Set against the Middle Eastern senior developer band of $32,000–$42,000, the spread is roughly three to four times. The spread is not a quality gap. It reflects the difference in cost of living between Toronto and Cairo or Amman — housing, services, and household costs are a fraction of Canadian levels, so funding an equivalent professional standard of living costs far less.
An honest comparison also includes what the raw salary spread does not capture. A remote hire needs structured onboarding, overlap planning, and deliberate management attention that a local hire absorbs through the office by default. The full cost picture of a remote engagement is the subject of a separate guide, linked at the end of this page — it narrows the raw gap somewhat without closing it.
Why is paying above local market the right model?
Obelisk’s compensation policy is to pay at or above the upper half of the local bands in this guide. The reasoning is practical before it is ethical: the top of the regional talent pool has options — PwC, Capgemini, and Vodafone teams in Egypt, Gulf remote roles, European contracts — and below-market offers select for the candidates those employers passed on.
Above-market pay is also what drives retention. A professional earning at the top of their local band, on a stable contract with a Canadian team, has little reason to churn — and tenure is where remote placements compound in value, as context accumulates and management overhead falls.
The framing we hold ourselves to is simple: lower cost of living, not lower quality. The economics work because Cairo rent is not Toronto rent — not because the work is worth less. Squeezing the gap erodes exactly the relationship that makes long-tenure placements work, which is why we publish these bands instead of obscuring them.
How does this map to flat monthly pricing?
Obelisk does not pass salary through to clients. Clients pay a flat monthly CAD fee per placement under a single Canadian B2B contract, and Obelisk employs and pays the professional locally — at or above the bands in this guide.
The difference between the monthly fee and the underlying salary is not margin alone. The fee covers sourcing, the vetting process, employment costs in the talent’s country, HR administration, payroll, ongoing account management, and the 30-day replacement guarantee. Annualized, a Senior placement at $4,000 per month is $48,000 CAD fully loaded — against $110,000–$190,000 all-in (base plus payroll taxes, benefits, recruiting fees, and equipment) for a comparable local hire.
Every placement comes from the same pool these bands describe: pre-vetted, full-time dedicated professionals, working a schedule with 6–7 hours of Canadian Eastern overlap. We handle HR, payroll & management; the client runs the work.
