Who this is for

Founders, COOs, and CFOs at Canadian SMBs scaling beyond a part-time bookkeeper

If your books are running late, month-end close drags into the third week, your founder is approving every expense, or you cannot justify a $90K controller — Obelisk gives you a dedicated finance hire at one-third to one-half the cost. Embedded full-time, async-fluent, and trained in global accounting standards.

WHAT YOU GET

The full operational surface, on one contract.

Each component is a self-contained part of the engagement — sourcing, vetting, embedded delivery, and managed HR/payroll all sit on our side.

Embedded, not fractional

Most outsourced bookkeeping is fractional — your books share an accountant with twelve other clients. Obelisk gives you one finance hire dedicated to your business, learning your chart of accounts, your vendors, and your margin profile. Quality of judgment compounds with continuity.

Western accounting standards

Finance candidates from our network are trained in IFRS, GAAP, and Big Four-aligned audit practices. Most have either worked inside or audited a global enterprise (PwC, Deloitte, EY, KPMG, Vodafone, Capgemini). The Canadian-specific tax and compliance overlay is added during onboarding.

Tools your CFO already trusts

Active production experience across QuickBooks Online, Xero, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Bill.com, Ramp, Brex, Expensify, and Stripe. We match for the specific tools you run rather than hire generically. The ramp window is days, not months.

We handle HR, payroll & management

One Canadian B2B contract, CAD-invoiced. Local employment compliance, monthly payroll for the talent, and ongoing account management on our side. Your finance stack and your CFO's calendar are the only surfaces your team interacts with.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Common questions about this engagement.

If you don't see your question, every first call is with a co-founder — bring it then.

Can a Middle Eastern bookkeeper or accountant handle Canadian payroll and tax?

The talent's training is in IFRS and GAAP; the Canadian-specific overlay (CRA filings, GST/HST, T4/T4A, provincial payroll) is added during onboarding using your existing accountant or bookkeeper as a reference resource. For pure CRA-facing work we recommend pairing the Obelisk hire with a local CPA — this is standard practice and the cost-savings still hold.

What software does the finance network cover?

QuickBooks Online (most common in Canadian SMBs), Xero, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, FreshBooks, Wave, Bill.com, Ramp, Brex, Expensify, Plooto, Dext, Float, Stripe, and HubSpot CPQ. We match for current production experience with your stack rather than train post-hire.

Is the talent reliable for month-end close discipline?

Month-end close discipline is graded directly during the vetting process — accountants work a sample close exercise with intentionally messy data and we score reconciliation accuracy and what they flag, not just what they fix. References are explicitly asked about close cadence and missed deadlines.

Can the executive assistant handle calendar and inbox triage in real time?

Yes. EAs in our network work the same shifted-Cairo schedule as the rest of the network — overlap with Toronto runs roughly 9am–3pm Eastern, which is exactly the window most founders need calendar triage handled. Deep work (travel, expense, vendor research) extends into the Cairo afternoon.

How does Obelisk handle the confidentiality of financial data?

All finance hires sign a non-disclosure agreement as part of the engagement contract. Obelisk's Terms of Service §09 (Confidentiality) further constrains use of client financial data; survival clause is three years post-engagement. Access is provisioned to your existing tools rather than to local copies of data.

What is the difference between hiring an EA and an accountant?

An executive assistant owns calendar, inbox, travel, vendor coordination, and lightweight expense work — protecting founder time. An accountant or bookkeeper owns the ledger, AR/AP, reconciliation, and financial reporting. Most Canadian SMBs need an EA before $2M in revenue and an accountant by $1M; we will help scope the right hire on the discovery call.
