COMPARISON · OBELISK VS DEEL

Obelisk vs Deel.

Global Employer of Record for talent you already chose.

Obelisk and Deel solve adjacent problems with very different shapes. Deel is a global Employer of Record (EOR) and contractor-payments platform — it lets a Canadian company legally employ and pay someone in 150+ countries, after the company has already sourced and selected the person. Obelisk is a managed talent partner: we source and vet pre-vetted, full-time Middle Eastern professionals, then place them under one Canadian B2B contract with HR, payroll, and management included. The right answer depends on whether you have a candidate or just an open role.

ON ITS OWN TERMS

What each company actually does.

A fair, side-by-side description of both — written so each side would recognize itself.

OBELISK

Obelisk Talent

Obelisk Talent is a Canadian-incorporated talent outsourcing company that runs the full source-to-managed lifecycle. We recruit pre-vetted, full-time Middle Eastern professionals across four disciplines — Tech & IT, Marketing & Sales, Creatives, and Finance & Operations — and place them onto Canadian SMB teams under a single CAD-invoiced B2B Master Services Agreement. Each placement runs at a flat monthly tier rate (Junior $1,500–$2,000 through Lead $5,000–$6,500 CAD/month) that includes sourcing, vetting, onboarding, payroll, HR compliance, and account management. Brief to Day-1 is roughly 10 business days. The talent is dedicated full-time to one client, not multi-clienting. Replacement guarantee covers the first 30 days.

DEEL

Deel

Deel is the leading global Employer of Record platform, used by tens of thousands of companies to legally employ and pay full-time staff and contractors in 150+ countries. Deel handles the country-specific employment contract, local payroll, statutory benefits, and tax filings for the talent you have already hired. Pricing is typically a per-employee monthly EOR fee on top of the talent's salary (paid in their local currency), plus contractor-payment fees on the contractor side. Deel does not source candidates — that is your responsibility. Their value sits squarely in compliance and payments infrastructure: once you have selected the right person, Deel makes the international employment relationship turnkey.

WHEN EACH IS RIGHT

Pick honestly.

If your situation looks like one of these, that is the answer — regardless of which page you are reading.

Pick Obelisk when

Pick Obelisk when you have an open role and you want one partner to source, vet, and manage the talent end-to-end on a Canadian B2B contract — without standing up an international hiring funnel.

Pick Deel when

Pick Deel when you have already identified the person you want to hire (perhaps through a referral, a freelancer relationship, or a global job posting) and you need the country-specific employment, payroll, and compliance handled at scale.

BOTTOM LINE

What we would actually tell a friend.

If you are reading both sites because you have an open Canadian SMB role and limited bandwidth to run a global search, Obelisk closes the gap that Deel intentionally leaves open — finding the right person, vetting them rigorously, and embedding them into your team. If you have already done that work yourself for a specific person in a specific country, Deel is the cleaner answer for the compliance layer alone. The two are complementary in some workflows: a few clients first hired through Obelisk and later transitioned a placement to direct employment via Deel after the per-§08 buy-out. If that is the path you envision, talk to us first — the buy-out terms are documented in our Terms of Service.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Common Obelisk-vs-Deel questions.

Honest answers — including questions where the right answer is to use the other tool.

Does Deel source candidates?

No. Deel is an Employer of Record and contractor-payments platform — it solves the legal and operational problem of employing or paying someone in a country where you have no entity. Sourcing, interviewing, and selecting the talent stays on your side. Many Deel users source candidates through job boards, referrals, freelancer relationships, or other agencies first, then onboard them through Deel.

Is Obelisk an Employer of Record like Deel?

Obelisk Talent Inc. acts as the entity carrying the international employment relationship for the talent we place — so functionally, yes, the EOR layer is part of every Obelisk engagement. The structural difference is that Obelisk also runs the sourcing, vetting, embedding, and ongoing management around that EOR layer, under one Canadian B2B contract instead of as a separate platform fee.

Can I use Obelisk and Deel together?

It is uncommon but possible. The most realistic combination is using Obelisk to source and vet talent, then transitioning a specific placement to direct employment via Deel after the engagement matures — typically negotiated as a §08 buy-out (six months of monthly fees) per our Terms. We will discuss this honestly on the discovery call if it is the right path for your specific role.

How does the cost compare for a single full-time hire?

For a Senior software engineer based in Cairo: Obelisk's flat $4,000 CAD/month covers everything (sourcing, vetting, EOR, payroll, management). Deel's EOR fee for Egypt is roughly $499 USD/month (~$680 CAD) plus the talent's locally-set salary in EGP — once you add a market-rate Cairo senior salary, the headline numbers land in a similar range, but Deel does not include the cost of finding the person or replacing them if it does not work out.

How does the speed from open role to Day-1 compare?

Obelisk targets 10 business days from brief to a Day-1 hire — that includes the sourcing window. Deel can onboard a person you have already selected in days for most countries, but the full clock from open role to start date depends on how long your sourcing takes; for most Canadian SMBs that is the slower part of the funnel.

Does Obelisk operate outside the Middle East?

No, by design. Our talent network is purposefully focused on five Middle Eastern and North African countries because the region produces the cost-quality-time-zone combination that fits Canadian SMBs. Deel's value is breadth (150+ countries); Obelisk's value is depth in a region with a very specific structural fit.
