Building a Talent Company from Nova Scotia

By Ali Maher, Aug 25, 2026 7 min read

I did not plan to start a talent company. I spent a decade building software in Canada, and for the last stretch of that run the same conversation kept finding me: a founder with a good year behind them, a role open for sixty days, and a local salary band they could not make work. This post is what I learned building the answer to that conversation — before Obelisk Talent had a single client.

The local math broke first

A senior full-stack engineer in Toronto now runs $80,000 to $130,000 in base salary, before benefits, before the 20–25% a recruiter charges to find one, before the months the seat sits empty. For a 20-person SMB, that is not a hiring decision — it is a runway decision.

The alternatives each fail in their own way. Freelance marketplaces give you someone juggling five clients who disappears mid-sprint. A recruiting agency invoices the fee and vanishes on Day 1. Neither one is structurally wrong — they are just not built for a team that needs a real teammate.

The talent was never the problem — the bridge was

At the same time, engineers in Cairo, Amman, and Beirut are shipping production systems for PwC, Capgemini, and Vodafone at enterprise scale. The American University in Cairo and the University of Jordan graduate English-fluent STEM classes every year. The capability has existed for a decade.

What did not exist was a Canadian-incorporated partner willing to hold the whole relationship — sourcing, vetting, payroll, HR, and management — under one B2B contract in Canadian dollars. UK companies have had that bridge for years. Canadian companies had Upwork. That gap is the entire reason Obelisk exists.

Build the infrastructure before the marketing

Every offshore horror story I have been told ends the same way: nobody verified anything. Identity was assumed, the CV was taken at face value, the assessment was gamed. So before we sent a single cold email, we built the verification stack — anti-fraud identity checks, a custom application for talent sourcing, a vetting-records pipeline, and automated onboarding workflows. Not because it was glamorous, but because the failure modes of this industry are structural, and you cannot fix structural problems with good intentions.

The unglamorous truth: most of what makes Obelisk work is invisible on the website. That is intentional. The site sells a 15-minute call; the infrastructure is what makes the call safe to take.

Incorporate where your customer lives

Obelisk Talent Inc. is a federal CBCA corporation, registered in Nova Scotia and extra-provincially in Ontario, headquartered in Bedford. That was a deliberate choice, not paperwork. A Canadian SMB signing with us gets a Canadian contract, Canadian-law protections, and a CAD invoice — not a wire transfer to a foreign entity they have to explain to their accountant.

Trust in this category is earned through boring details. The incorporation is one of them. Published pricing tiers are another.

The ethics are the business model

Talent on our platform earns above-market pay for their local market. That is not charity — it is retention strategy and quality filter in one. Underpaid offshore talent churns, and churn is the exact failure our model exists to eliminate. We sell full-time, embedded, single-client professionals, and we will never render them as a browsable grid of hourly profiles, because people are not inventory and the moment you treat them that way the quality follows.

What has not happened yet

We are pre-first-client, and I would rather say that plainly than perform traction we do not have. The vetting process is real, the pricing is published, the contracts are ready, and the first call is 15 minutes with a co-founder — me.

If you are a Canadian founder holding an open role you cannot fill locally at a number that makes sense, the fastest way to evaluate everything above is to be the first case study. The 30-day replacement guarantee exists precisely so that bet is asymmetric in your favour.
